Three Meta-Problems Plaguing American Politics
Irrationality of humans, absolute rights, and sanctity of procedure
America’s system of political organization and government has set the environment so that its citizens are able, motivated, and incentivized to pursue and realize their creative and entrepreneurial potential. Along with the blessing of geography and a bit of luck in its relatively short history, America can claim economic, military, and cultural leadership in the world. However, this leadership may be slipping as it is threatened externally by a rising China and faces decay and grinding conflict internally. Indeed, the constant and intense conflict between the two main political parties makes it appear that even the simplest decisions are difficult and essential functions of government are not guaranteed. This conflict at the governmental level is mirrored in the greater fractured and polarized American society. It feels like the country is tearing apart and imploding in front of our very eyes.
Why is this so? We can point to specific sets of issues or incidents, actions or failure to act, and assign blame. There’s plenty of blame to go around according to one’s own political ideology, party affiliation, religion, socioeconomic status, or even race and gender.
