In political philosophy, many issues and points of contention between the Left and Right contain a symmetric tension regarding the following: individual liberty vs. social security, capitalist profits vs. redistributive taxes on those profits, the needs of the few vs. the needs of the many, and so on.
A recurring theme is that the Left and the Right have a similarity in the application of their respective ideologies. For example, the Left not tolerating a single gun death and OK with banning all guns, or the Right not tolerating a single death from Muslim terrorism and OK with banning all Muslims from entry into America.
An interesting symmetry also exists in the two types of logical fallacies each side tends to commit: the naturalistic fallacy and the moralistic fallacy.
Naturalistic Fallacy
- What is natural, is necessarily good
- What is, ought to be
- Conservatives tend to commit this fallacy
Example: Men are naturally more aggressive and competitive while women are naturally less aggressive and cooperative. Therefore, competitive domains ought to be the province of men and cooperative domains ought to be the province of women.
