Anti-Vaxxer Stances Concern Risk Perception And Not Scientific Truth

Risk perception is more relevant than scientific truth in vaccines and other issues

Well-intentioned and well-meaning parents and activists may fear that vaccines cause Autism or may subject children to danger.

I don’t believe anti-vaccine advocates, aka anti-vaxxers, are flawed in character or malicious in intent. They want what all people want, the absolute best for their own children and other children. Let’s start from this point so that we don’t demonize anti-vaxxers, attribute malicious intent, or otherwise mock or insult them for lack of scientific or statistical ability.

However, with the unfortunate reappearance of Measles cases, the anti-vaccination view must be understood and challenged.

Some questions to consider:

  • Why did the anti-vaccine movement gain traction and why is it so resistant to scientific evidence and statements for vaccine safety by doctors and scientists?
  • What does this resistance imply about the reasoning processes?
